Mario Benjamin is a must have for any serious Haitian art collector.

- When youre not white, people have their preconceived categories about your culture and they want to see them forever - Mario Benjamin

Mario Benjamin was born in Haiti in 1964. The youngest of five siblings, he was raised in a household filled with music and art and has fed his passion for creation to its most daring stages and beyond.

Benjamin began exhibiting in 1982, and has since shown his work in such countries as Italy, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, Spain and France and the United States. In 1997 he was invited to participate in the Biennials of Johannesburg and Havana, which were followed by invitations to the Biennial of Sao Paulo in 1998 and the Biennial of Venice in 2001. An integral part of the multifaceted national and international Haitian art scene, Benjamin will be representing Haiti in the Biennial of Santo Domingo, from November 2001 until February 2002.

Having always listened to his inner voices Benjamin has never accepted to be imprisoned by others concept of what Haitian Art should be.

This particular painting is part of a series that was shown in paris at the -Halle St. Pierre 2001- and is also featured in the catalog -Anges et Demons-.
Note: The paint that looks white around the ear in the photo is actually a glossy black painted on a black background.
