Sanon is without a doubt, one of the leaders of the third generation of Haitian artists.

Sanon, Roosevelt
1952-

Roosevelt Sanon was born in 1952 in Jacmel. Encouraged by a painter friend, Raphael Surin, who discovered his drawing talent, the young Sanon spent his school vacations studying art. In 1971 he started exhibiting his works. From 1975 he evolved rapidly and is currently one of the better-known sophisticated primitives of Haitian art.

Sanon is considered a landscape artist. The countryside between Jacmel and Port-au-Prince with its natural beauty and pastoral setting inspires Sanon to paint with tender and delicate nuances. The hills and mountains are portrayed in tones of gray-greens and blues. He chooses to portray his scenes in what appear to be the tranquil moments of the day, dawn or twilight. Sanon is without a doubt, one of the leaders of the third generation Haitian artists.
