Manuel, Michèle
Michèle Manuel began her art studies at the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince, where she studied with American painter Lois Jones Pierre-Noel. She continued her training with Cervoni in Puerto Rico until she went to Rochester University, NY.
Her professional career started in the early sixties. She worked with a group of women painters. Together these women organized in 1963, 1965, 1967 and 1970 expositions, which proved their worth and the place that they occupied in the Haitian Art Movement. These shows revealed Michèle Manuel's talent. She was also strongly encouraged by the Red Carpet Galerie of Andrew Saba.
The constant discipline she adopted from the beginning and carried on to this day permits that every year her paintings are part of exhibits in Haiti and abroad.
Michèle Manuel does not try to reproduce nature. She cleverly organizes her space, playing with perspective. Her work irradiates warmth, the result of strong, bright, sunny, colors. Her paintings and drawings reveal her singularity in regard to her fellow painters. She does not belong to any school after having seen a lot, tried a lot; she managed to create her own style. In front of a Manuel, one has no doubt that it is a Manuel.
