Senatus, Jean-Louis
1949-
Jean-Louis Senatus was born in Leogane. In 1969 he started to draw and paint on his own. He enrolled at the Institut Lope de Vega where he learned the basic techniques of painting and it was not until 1973 that his career took a turning point. He joined the studio of the Greek painter and art professor Scodilis, who sojourned in Haiti. Under the professor's influence, Senatus refined his drawing and brought out shaded tones of colors to obtain a luminous and soft perspective. He became one of the masters of sophisticated Haitian art. He is one of the artists that were featured in a major show in Munich in the fall of 1986. His works have been sold at Sotheby's in New York and one of his paintings is in the Musee International d'Art Naïf in Paris.
