The following mailing was made to our subscribers at the death of Alexandre Grégoire:

Dear Friends,

Haitian Art has lost a true National Treasure.

Alexandre Grégoire, an artist that will be remembered as one of the pillars of Haitian Art, passed away in his home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on July 28th 2001.

Gregoire is considered one of the best of the first generation of Haitian naive artists and his paintings were recently shown in New York as part of the Jonathan Demme Collection at the Equitable Gallery. His work stands alongside some of the greatest -Primitive Art- of all time, like the work of Anselm Boix-Vive from France or Yvan Rabuzin from Yugoslavia, and closer to home, Philomé Obin, Hector Hyppolite, Jasmin Joseph... to name a few of our historical masters.

In a time of uncertainty about the future of Haitian art, it is important to rediscover the national legacy that great Haitian Artists such as Alexandre Gregoire have produced during their passage and pay a fitting tribute to the great service they have rendered our people.

We invite you to explore the Documents and Resources sections of ArtMedia Haiti
