Abelard, Gesner
1922-
Gesner Abelard was born in 1922 in Port-au-Prince. He began at an early age to study drawing at the Jean-Marie Guilloux School in Port-au-Prince. He later began sculpting at the Ecole Industrielle under the direction of the well-known sculptor Huberman Charles. He worked as a mechanic until 1948 when he joined a group of young artists who worked for the Centre d'Art. In 1949 the city of Port-au-Prince celebrated its bicentennial with an International Exhibit. Abelard received the bronze medal in the painting competition. In 1955 he participated in an exhibit organized by Alcoa Steamship Company, Inc. He was twenty-six when he left the Centre d'Art in 1959.
People all over the world have collected Abelard's works. He has participated in several exhibits around the globe. Among them are: Guatemala 1951, Mexico 1952, New York 1965, Davenport, U.S.A. 1966, St. Thomas 1967, Miami, U.S.A. 1969, Kingston, Jamaica 1969, Venezuela 1973 and Switzerland 1972.
