The people of Haiti are certainly not primitive cave people but the majority lead a very hard life. Haiti is often called the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. For many Haitians, sustaining life is a daily struggle. But, there are no people in this world richer in artistic talent and imagination than the people of Haiti. If you stand on a street corner in Port au Prince for more than half an hour, chances are you will see two or three people walking with a painting they have just finished. Whether they express themselves through music, art, or poetry every Haitian is an artist. In Haiti any object can be turned into a work of art, from the beautiful metal decoupe’(cut metal) made from steel drum containers, to the striking Tap Tap’s (taxi’s) and mystical Vodou flags.

Haitian art is famous all over the world. The Haitian painter is primarily a colorist. The beautiful bright red, yellow, violet colors bursting from the canvas are instinctive to the Haitian artists. Often the artists get their inspiration from Vodou, but they also portray Haitian reality and culture. Though naive in appearance, they are actually symbolically complex works of art. The Haitian artist is a chroniquer of his time, a philosopher, a satirist, a Vodou priest. From the completely untutored painter to the sophisticated academically trained artist, they all tell us the story of a great nation that still struggling but will one day triumph. We at World Art Galleries, Inc. make it our mission to promote the beautiful arts of Haiti, its culture and the people behind the masterpieces.
